Introduction:
World Environment Day (WED) is celebrated every year on the 5th of June to raise global
awareness on the need to take positive environmental action. WED is celebrated to inspire
people around the globe to be active about environment and learn different
means through which they can help to ensure the future of our planet is safe.
The World
Environment day was celebrated this year with the theme "Think.Eat.Save".
Think. Eat .Save
is an anti-food waste and food loss campaign that encourages reducing the food
print.
Prakurthi Youth Network
Karnataka Programme
As part of
“Prakurthi Youth Network Karnataka Programme, supported by TDH(G) the youth
of this network had organised various events to celebrate the WED 2013.
The Programme:
Nisarga Foundation, H.D. Kote, Hunsur:Nisarga Foundation along with local
networks and the youth members had organised
various events and activities to celebrate the WED in H.D.Kote Taluk. The
inauguration of the programme was done by Taluk Health officer. There were
nearly 400 participants from across the district.
The themes discussed were on:

Cleanliness in every house
and around the house and streets to protect against Dengue fever.
·
Protect environment in all
public places.
·
To improve the quality of
life of all living beings on this planet without harming nature.
They also organized a procession chanting slogan to
create public attention and awareness on the issues related to ecology
protection. During the procession the youth members collected the waste plastic
papers lying on the streets as part of creating awareness in keeping the
streets clean and saying: No to Plastic”. All the participants gave the oath to
protect environment in their respected area.
KIDS, Dharward
KIDS has actively
participate with 50 Youths from Target group in Drawing, Essay Competition regarding
World Environment Day Programme which is organized by Karnataka Pallution
Board, Hubli Dharwad Citizen Environment Committee Dharwad, Karnataka Forest
Department Dharwad on 05-06-2013 at Parisar Bhavan Shri Nagar Dharwad.
On 06-06-2013 KIDS
Organanized Rally, Gardening Treeies, Awairness Programme with the
collaboration of Hubli Dharwad Citizen Environment Committee Dharwad, Gram
Panchayat Maradgi & Gubbachchi Makkal Maha Sangha Dharwad at Sommapur Village
in this programme there are School Children,Women
SHG Members, Teachers,SDMC
Members,Taluka Panchayat President,GramPanchayat Maradgi President,Youths
Totally 200 Members are participated.
Regarding these KIDS
conducted Rally in village this rally will go to every colony and give the
awareness regarding cleanliness of environment and prohibition of using
plastics. In Hubli & Dharwad low quality plastic is prohibited.
SEEDS, Davangere
SEEDS
organised World Environment Day on 8th June-2013 at Sandur in association with
Forest Department and Youth Network.
In the
inaugural address, Mr.Ganesh, Range Forest Officer expressed the need and
importance for action programs rather than celebrations for environment
protection. He continued to explain that environment is not only trees, it is
balanced relation between the different components in an ecosystem. There is
need for the human beings to learn to live with the environment.
Mr.Samad
Kottur-Lecturer in his address mentioned about the importance of food that one
third of the produced food is wasted which increased methane gas which in turn
increased the global temperature. He mentioned about the need to save the
forests for future generation.
Mr.Sanjeevaiah-Director
SEEDS explained about the work of SEEDS for last seven years in 22 villages
about enrolment of out of school children, formation of eco clubs in schools
and he explained about the theme of ‘World Environment Day’ is Think, Eat and
Save.
And also
explained the campaign is focused on reducing the wastage of food. According to
the UN Food and Agriculture organization, every year 1.3 crore tones of food is
wasted
Mr.G.N.Simha
from REACH NGO, the chief guest in the program in his speech
explained about
the status of present environment and the effect of fertilizers, pesticides on
the environment.
Forest
department distributed variety of plants to children. 135 children participated
in the program. Competitions in paintings, debate on environment protection
were organised. English-Kannada Bharadwaja dictionaries are distributed to
winner children.
RURAL LITERACY AND
HEALTH PROGRAMME (RLHP), Mysore
To honour the 43rd World Environment Day, The Rural
Literacy and Health Programme (RLHP) hosted a gathering of children, youths and
teachers at Government High School, Gowsiyanagar, Mysore on 5th June 2013.
The theme of the programme “Think.Eat.Save” was specifically
highlighted by different dignitaries at the mass gathering of students, public
and teachers. The function was graced by the chief guest Mr. Ravikumar famous
environmentalist, Mrs. Vidhya from TdH, Mrs. Shivamma, Headmistress, SDMC
president, teachers and students. The programme was presided by Mr. Shivamma,
Headmistress of Govt. School.
About 300
children, teachers and parents participated in an awareness rally from the Govt. High
School Gowsiayanagr to Thriveni circle, Dr. Rajkumar road holding placards with
messages like ‘save nature’', ‘plant trees’ and avoid plastic'. Mrs. Vidhya
from Tdh
flagged off the rally.
The programme started with prayer song by the
children of Govt. High School. Mr. Srinivas, school teacher welcomed the guests,
children and other participants of the programme.
During the key note adress Mrs. Saraswathi,
Director of RLHP highlighted the importance of the day and the reasons for RLHP
selecting Govt. schools to celebrate the day. Children are the future to protect
and take care of the enviornment. She also spoke about the prevention food
wastage and 1 in every 7 people in the world go to bed hungry and more than
20,000 children under the age of 5 die daily from hunger.
Children are planting trees at school premises.
Chief guest
Mr. Ravikumar inaugurated the programme by planting sapling in the school
premises. A plantation drive was conducted at the school premises by teachers
and students. 50 saplings were planted in the school premises. The organisation
distributed 200 saplings free of cost to the children.
During the inaugural address Mr. Ravikumar
expressed his concern towards the environment. He explained to the children
about climate change and need to save water. He urged the children to be
friendly with nature and plant saplings which need less water. He also stated that it is everyone’s
responsibility to make the environment healthy, clean and protected.
During the
presidential address Mrs. Shivamma spoke about the importance of saving
environment and planting trees. She urged the children and teachers to plant
trees and flowers in school premises. Also she expressed special thanks to RLHP
for selecting their school for the environment day programme and planting
trees.
To save environment and to monitor trees and
plants, an Environment committee was formed at school level. A teacher and
eight children are the members of this committee. This committee will monitor
the growth of trees and plants and will take initiatives to plant more trees.
The programme concluded with vote of thanks.
Conclusion:-
The world environment day programme was meaningful
and planted 50 saplings at the premises of Govt. High School, Gowsiyanagar and
distributed 200 plants to the children.
The children and teachers pledged to plant trees at their household and
nurture it to save environment.
